The Review of Development of Deepin Desktop Environment

Time flies. It has been two full years since we announced that we were to develop our own desktop environment.

During this period, there were both support and opposition voices outside, and a small number of people even ridiculed us, saying that there weren’t teams at home who had abilities to develop desktop environment independently at all and we would only conduct some simple modifications to the existing desktop environment at best and then bluff people into believing that we would release a "domestic desktop environment".

But we resisted the pressure without any fraud and have been dedicated to hard work. We have not only independently developed Deepin Desktop Environment, but also constantly improved it and therefore we’ve got high praise from users both at home and abroad:

1. Deepin Desktop Environment is the first desktop environment built on HTML5 technology in the world.
2. Deepin Team is the only Chinese team who can directly build desktop environment on X11.
3. Deepin Desktop Environment has been widely ported to other Linux distributions, such as Arch, openSUSE, Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Manjaro and Anthon, etc

Now, Deepin 2014.1 has been released (equipped with Deepin Desktop Environment 2.0 by default). In this version, we paid more attention to the beauty, details and the custom features of desktop environment. We have basically achieved the goals o Deepin Desktop Environment.

Deepin Desktop Environment mainly consists of Login Manager, Desktop, Dock, Launcher and Control Center. After the evolution of two versions, the system style and each module have been changed a lot, but we still stick to the principle of "Fast· Stable · Easy to Use" and have done a lot of improvements to the system and desktop environment. After discarding the dross and selecting the essential, we’ve retained the most useful features and designed each module elaborately to ensure that the operation is simple and fast.

However, there are still many unfinished features in Deepin Desktop Environment, but we have the confidence and ability to build Deepin Desktop Environment into the easiest to use and the most attractive desktop environment under Linux to let more people be able to experience the infinite charm of Deepin system!

 

Conclusion

We are often asked by people: Why do you cling to developing your own wheels?

Here is our answer: Because we are not satisfied with wheels of someone else, or others make wheels too slowly. And now, Deepin Team is a team who have the ability to create wheels. We will stick to manufacturing our own wheels, and we will manufacture our wheels better and better!
